Overheating is often a reason for the computer rebooting. Try changing the fan/fans. They only cost a few bucks and it may solve your problem. This sorted mine out when I had the same issues.

Hi, I would like to Un-install Yahoo Messenger from my Computer (Running Windows Xp: MCE). But Every time I try Un-installing it from the Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs)....before it reaches 1% of removal...Windows XP restarts by itself. I've tried cleaning my Registry then removing and still no success. I've also tried using MSConfig but no success since its not a Start-up program, my configuration is you must click it in order for it to run. I've thought of Deleting the Folder from C:\Program Files\Yahoo Messenger then cleaning my registry but I'm not sure if that will work. Any Suggestions?

This is the exact same problem I have been experiencing--beginning yesterday, January 10, 2007. No matter how carefully I type in the exact symbols, it will not accept my response.

With some images, it is difficult to determine what the symbols are; but even when it is clear exactly what symbols are required, and even tho they are correctly typed in, the block persists.

Someone else used my computer yesterday, without my knowledge or permission, and may have logged into their Yahoo mail. Could that have caused the problem somehow?

This has nothing to do with Router Security. This has to do with having a wireless card, and someone somehow accessing a port in my computer. This causes my computer to lock to a slow halt every now and then.. Its very annoying.

I tried netstat -a -s , but that can be misleading, as firefox uses about 4 ports and yahoo messenger uses about 2 to 3.

So, you really can't tell that way.

Are they actually accessing your computer, or just stealing your bandwidth? I had a problem with a neighbor doing the latter, so I started screwing with him/her. I unplugged my DSL when I saw they were streaming, cutting them off right in the middle. Next, I redirected any initial access through my wireless to a page that told them they were caught! Finally, I went ahead and enabled WEP security. I wasn't worried about my system itself being hacked, just my bandwidth being hijacked when I'm paying for it. If these people were just doing a quick check of email or hitting a few web pages, I would have probably allowed them to continue, but not when they go streaming like they were.

If Add/Remove is not working, try to find the folder in which Norton Anti-Virus is stored, and see if you can find any files that are called un-install. If all else fails, I would just try to delete all folders and files associated with it, but once again, that's ONLY IF ALL ELSE FAILS, including trying to find a un-install file.

And yes, Norton Antivirus is a incredibly horrible anti-virus, all it does it just take up room on your computer, may I suggest using Zone Labs? anyway, good luck with that.

When you are downloading a movie or song or something from Limewire, you are allowing that file into the computer. In other words, you are trusting it. However, sometimes the files aren't always trustworthy and they will turn out to be viruses or spyware. Computer problem whilst trying to run a PC game?

I hope someone can help with this. I have Windows XP and am trying to run Age of Empires II, which I have played before. Now all of a sudden when I open it, the computer screen moves the game about three inches to the left, leaving a black margin on the right side. I tried to change the screen resolution lower and higher, but it makes no difference. I went into Windows help, where it mentioned changing it to 256 colour, but that didn't work either. I tried changing it to an earlier Windows version and also tried to change the display size to 640 x ? (can't remember), but that didn't work. The only thing different about my computer now is that I used to have Norton Security running, but now have ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite. I noticed that until I click allow on the alert Zonealarm displays before opening the game, the display goes distorted, and changed colours to black and blue. PS. This only happens whilst trying to play a PC game, so it's not a monitor problem...

You do not have to renew Norton. However, you do not get the same protection that is given with the yearly subscription. To safeguard your computer I would advise spending the $25-$30 a year for maximum protection. Norton has the info when you log on. I don't remember exactly where it is, but you should be able to find it. Just keep clicking until you find a window that has the information.

I noticed this when I can hook into my next door neighbours internet, I don't because I have my own, but it lets me and sometimes I hook onto that one thinking it is mine. Vista Laptop Security Suite?

Looking for a good security that isn't going to make my computer sluggish. I've been using the trial of Windows Live OneCare and have been somewhat satisfied with it overall. It doesnt have as many advanced options as i'd like to avoid the same reoccuring annoying info it tells me.

Anyways the trial is over and I've heard bad things about the actual protection it provides compared to other suites.

I haven't found a way to do what you are asking. You can set up a password that will be nearly impossible for them to "crack". This is called a Strong Password and is very effective in preventing unauthorized or unwanted access to your account.

Make a password of random LETTERS, NUMBERS AND SYMBOLS of at least 8 characters. For example ye_i+*tx2 (.)85. If you must write it down be sure to put it in you wallet or a place on your person where others cannot see or access it. It will only take a few uses before you have a password like this memorized.

With a random password like the above will give you great protection. You will know if anyone get into your account cause they will have to change your password. They will not be able to guess it based on knowledge of you or to guess it.

My friend ask me to take a look at her friend's Dell XP computer because the person throught they had a virus.

It took about 2 minutes to see what was giveing all the infected computer warnings. Someone had downloaded what they throught was a spyware program called Win Reanamator.

I can deal with this but i see anouther problem, someone installed Norton 2005%26Norton 360* as a favor "free antivirus", so here is an outdated version of Norton doing nothing but messing this computer up and most of us know Norton can be a nightmare to uninstall because the uninstall feature requires a product key and the add remove program feature allso fails to uninstall Norton.

right click the icon in the system tray (where your clock is, bottom right) and disable or shutdown or exit.
This should help i do it when i dont want windows defender to be activated do this press ctrl+alt+delete not backspace then task manager should come up go to the processes tab scroll down till you see something that says MsMpEng.exe after right click it and end the process but i suggest turning defender on after you do you zwinky stuff

It's a trojan. You may have opened an ecard via your email or downloaded a free screen saver or codecs recently and the trojan (fake program) installed itself.

You need to identify the name of the trojan (it will try and direct you to a website to buy a product) in order to discover how to get rid of it.

Do a Google search on the name of the product it is trying to get you to buy.

sounds like some kind of spyware has embedded itself in your system when this happens push ctrl+alt+del and this will bring up the task manager and under the applications tab it will tell you what is running.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del. That will open Task Manager. Then find the software that hog your computer most. They are indicated by CPU time number (how may percent). Now, find out what software is it.

There's this thing that keeps popping up. I don't have AOL, I have comcast. And my security is from McAfee, so I'm wondering if this is just some virus trying to get on my computer.

just ignore it. i used to have aol and switched to comcast because that internet was so messed up. stuff kept popping up, my whole computer went slow, and i always had trouble logging in. if u don't have aol anymore, then there shouldn't be stuff popping up. i wouldn't download if i were you, it would probably just make ur computer slower.

It all depends on how your computer is set up.

Use the remove programs in control panel; search and remove "Norton' and "symantec" from windows explorer and the registry.
Contact Bt and ask them for another protection disk and they will send you another one Free!
Type msconfig in the run box and then find the remaining Norton files and uncheck them restart and then your good. The files won't be removed but they are taking up little space and your just turning them off so they have no effect on you at all. Unless you reactivate them.

If you are attempting to save your username / password in your browser (IT'S NOT A SMART IDEA) this is a security risk... since anyone sitting at your computer could log in and if you became infected with spyware it would send your informaiton to the attacker...

This feature is called autocomplete and can be found by going to TOOLS %26gt;%26gt; Internet Options %26gt;%26gt; Content tab %26gt;%26gt; AutoComplete

if the boxes are unchecked then it will not remember those things... you should always have it prompt you at least for your password...

Also, for banking websites you usually need to allow cookies to be installed / saved within your browser.. so if you went into Tools %26gt;%26gt; Internet Options %26gt;%26gt; Browsing History %26gt;%26gt; and delete temporary internet files...and deleted cookies... you would have to go back to the site and reinstall those cookies all over again.

If the cookies are not re-installing.. you may need to adjust the slider Tools %26gt;%26gt; Internet Options %26gt;%26gt; Privacy tab

I recommend setting the slider to medium-high which will allow banking to work.

Long way round would be to hack the WEP key. Quick way would be to force a reset on the router and reconfigure from scratch ;-) You will need a pen to press the reset button for 5 seconds to set it back to factory default settings. Then it is like new.

Warning: All settings, including ADSL/DSL usernames and passwords will be lost!! I accept no responsibility if this advice goes wrong! :-)

Update: Connect the router via a network cable to your computer and browse to the setup page (usually http://192.168.1.1 or something). Login and reconfigure your wireless settings. Once reconfigured unplug network cable and try connecting wirelessly. HTH.

This will be my first time to buy a dell computer. I've found the desktop I want, but once I select the computer a whole list of options appears such as:

So this means the computer itself has no software or programs included...not even MS word, Excel, PowerPoint etc..

They are unlikely to be virus related but do a scan anyway to make sure. Most likely is that they are now taking up a lot of your system resourses.

A growing number of programs automatically add themselves to the Startup list so that they鈥檒l run as soon as Windows loads. You can disable any you don鈥檛 want by going to Start, Run and typing 鈥榤sconfig鈥?into the box without the quotes. Hit Enter on your keyboard, then click the Startup tab and untick any undesired entries.

The last time I used my computer, this problem surfaced.

When I "activated" a text field - as in whenever I clicked the text field to type, a whole string of Zs would appear, as if someone was typing them. I was still able to type, just that the Zs would appear as well.

These text fields included text boxes, search engines, URL fields, file names, forums, notepads... essentially everything.

Hence, I was unable to do anything because the Zs would appear mysteriously. I did not make any adjustments to settings etc.

Luckily, the second time I turned on my laptop after that incident, which is now, I can type perfectly well and my laptop is working perfectly fine.

I really hope you can perhaps enlighten on the causes and solutions to this problem.

Secondly,I would also like to find out if there are any ways to help speed up my computer and start-up time.

No. It is not Norton. I say this assuming you do not have some completely old computer that has no RAM and no CPU speed. So obviously this would be a queue to check these things. If you are THAT low on resources you would really want to upgrade your system.

The questions to ask yourself are "what exactly is slow"

If it is your internet connection that could be your DSL provider or it could be the websites you are trying to reach.

You can drop to a command promtp and try a ping test or go to a speedtest website like speedguide.net

If you are slow opening programs then you might want to first check that you do not have a virus.. oftentimes when someone is infected and they try to finally install a reliable product the virus will do everything in its power to disable the scanner. You may want to go to the symantec website and do a web based scan. You may also want to force the product to update and perform a complete scan. Spyware and adware can also cause slowing so you may want to get SpyBot S%26D and run that. I would not add a bunch of programs though as it will cause more slowing and the wrong programs can really mess you up.

The computer is new, purchased in April, and it has only just started doing this but not every time I click 'turn off computer'. It's almost like I clicked on 'restart'. Security on there is first rate and there have been no viruses, trojans, or worms on it, no spyware or adware. It functions perfectly and mostly when I shut down it doesn't restart. Shutdown problems in Windows XP are most commonly caused by what is know in computer circles as legacy hardware - old technology components and peripherals that are not Plug and Play (PnP) devices - and software-compatibility issues.

If your computer was shutting down, but all of a sudden it won't shut down properly, or it restarts during the shutdown, if you installed any new software or drivers, remove the software via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, or use the Roll Back Driver feature in the Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and find the device, double-click on its entry and open its Driver tab) to restore the old driver. yes, i have contacted myspace and sure i am logging in correctly, i've cleared cookies, restarted my computer, contacted myspace. i can get into my account from other computers, just not home computer. the only potential clue...i upgraded my mcafee security and ever since then cannot get in. i have checked to allow cookies and not a blocked site.

My computer keeps freezing up just about every time I use it recently!

I will be just looking at the news or whatever, and then it freezes and my mouse is like stuck, and it makes this "BEEP" noise and then won't do anything, so then I got to shut down my whole computer!

You could have a hardware problem. Check your fan on your processor inside your computer to see if it has quit or become to dirty to cool well. If so blow it out with a can of air from a computer store.

Other than that check your power supply fan to make sure it is working. Feel on back of your computer where you plug your cord up to feel for air moving out or into your computer.

Make sure you have cleaned all your cookies and history and website urls and run a spyware program . Make sure your spyware program has been updated. Let it run a deep clean on your computer.

Will need to program varying logon times depending on day of week (e.g. 45 minutes per weekday; 2 hours Friday evening; 2 hours anytime on Saturday and Sunday). Either a plug-n-play device, or software that will allow me to program a standard usb flash drive to do the same thing. I've seen a lot of software programs that will limit computer time, but none that will allow me to program a standard usb flash drive into a "computer key" with a specified number of minutes that can be used. They actually had those things when I was a kid and crikey, did they work well. They were called a "kick in the backside". Seriously though, surely there's a better way. could you network the computers and just pull the plugs out of the HUB when time's up? Just do the scan, and let it sit. don't mess with it. Doing the scan overnight is a good idea. even if it's slow, it should eventually work, and you can fix the problem.

This is Adware/Spyware that has been downloaded to your computer usually because you visited an untrustworthy website. i.e. a dating website, a porno website, or a hacking website.

The only disadvantage of the Windows Firewall is that it doesn't block any outgoing traffic, unlike the free Zonealarm firewall. If you have a trojan installed on your computer, it will still be able to access the Internet because it's outgoing traffic in the eyes of Windows Firewall. However it surely gives you good protection against web attacks.
