What Have I done to my computer?

I have a 2005 Dell XPS Media center computer. Recently I have been getting message such as "system not responding" with various names such as sprtcmd.exe, MSAScui.exe,Media Center, explorer.exe, and McAgent_Main_Hidden.... ; I understand these are possible errors with explorer, McAfee Security, but I have been unsucessful in clearing up the problem. I believe this is causing my computer to run much slower. Please give me some insight on this and what I might do to rectify the problem. Oh, I have used various reputable spyware systems, but, it reads my computer is functioning properly, and that cannot be the case when it takes 3 minutes for the computer to turn off or my window applications read "Not responding". I appreciate the help and Happy Holidays.

The ultimate bottleneck for any computer is the processor. Everything that happens on your computer goes through the processor.

If you have a large number of applications running on the computer and the processor speed is rated less than 2 Ghz that could be the reason for the system not responding errors.

The 3 minute shutdown time for the computer also points in this direction-a lot of apps waiting in line for processor time.

The other main choke point is RAM, everything must be loaded into the RAM for it to run. If the available amount is less than 1 GB in WinXP, then it will have an appreciable impact on system speed.
