If i got a virus on my computer and i buy anti virus software, will it get rid of the virus?

I just bought a new laptop and it came pre loaded with norton security demo version and windows vista, a couple days later, my computer started acting really funny and then said my computer said windows defender has detected spyware , do i want to clean my system, i said no in case it was the virus or spyware trying to infect my system so i tried to run scan via an online scanner from mcafee, it downloaded the software but then told it encountered an error and cant carry on, the same thing happened on other anti virus sites so i'm now sure i have a virus on my computer and was wondering if i unistall norton security as its only a trial version and bought a anti virus program will it fix it or not
